Mrs. Elizabeth Jean Traudt

Mrs. Elizabeth “Betty” Traudt, 81, of Floral Avenue, Canajoharie, New York died Thursday, March 1, 2012 at her home following a brief illness.
Born on September 22, 1930 in the town of Root, NY, she was the daughter of Ralph L. Becker and Gola Hoffman Becker. She was a graduate of Jordan High School, class of 1949 and was a lifetime area resident.
Mrs. Traudt was a mother and homemaker.
She was a communicant of Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church in Fort Plain.
Mrs. Traudt was a Cub Scout leader and an assistant with the swim program at Canajoharie School. She loved doing puzzles and watching soap operas.
In July 1962, Betty was married to Frederick “Fritz” Traudt at the former St. Peter’s & Paul’s Roman Catholic Church in Canajoharie.
Mrs. Traudt was predeceased by her first husband, Cecil “Zeke” DeForest in 1960; brothers, Robert Becker, Raymond Becker; sisters, Janet Spagnuola, Helen Mehaffey; as well as niece, Carol Haeflinger.
Betty is survived by her husband, Fritz Traudt of Canajoharie, NY; 3 daughters, Catherine DeForest of Town of Root, NY, Cindy Macpherson of Colombus, MI, Patricia Greco of Rexford, NY ; 2 sons, Michael Traudt of Brookfield, CT, Mark Traudt of Morristown, NJ; 10 grandchildren, Amanda DeForest, Sasha DeForest, Heather Macpherson, Celena Macpherson, James Macpherson, Eric Traudt, Allison Traudt, Kirsten Traudt, Megan Traudt, Gabriella Greco; 5 great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, March 5, 2012 at 1:00pm at Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church, Reid Street, Fort Plain, NY, with Father Dennis Murphy officiating. The family will receive relatives and friends on Sunday, March 4, 2012 from 2-4 & 6-8pm at Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, Inc., 20 Otsego Street, Canajoharie, NY 13317. Burial will take place at St. Peter’s & Paul’s Cemetery in Canajoharie at a later date.

Mrs. Eileen J. Nestle, 87, of Maple Avenue, Canajoharie, New York died, Friday, February 10, 2012 at Palatine Nursing Home.
Born on October 19, 1924 in Canajoharie, NY, she was the daughter of Henry Jones and Hazel Nichols Jones. She was a graduate of Canajoharie High School, class of 1944 and was a lifetime area resident.
Mrs. Nestle was a machine operator in the Gum Department at LifeSavers in Canajoharie for 37 years, retiring in March 1981.
She was a member of the Canajoharie Reformed Church.
Mrs. Nestle was a member of the Seebers Lane Grange, Treasurer and member of Canajoharie Senior Citizens Club and member of the 25 Year Club at LifeSavers.
On July 30, 1960 at the Canajoharie Reformed Church, Eileen was married to Donald C. Nestle. Together they celebrated over 51 years of marriage.
Mrs. Nestle is survived by her husband Donald C. Nestle of Canajoharie, NY; brother, Henry D. and his wife, Jane Jones of Canajoharie, NY; nephew, Jeffrey Roof of Johnstown, NY; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, February 14, 2012 at 11:00am at the Chapel of Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, Inc., 20 Otsego Street, Canajoharie, NY with Rev. Miriam Barnes officiating. The family will receive relatives and friends on Tuesday, February 14 from 10-11:00am at the funeral home. Burial will take place in Fort Plain Cemetery.

Mrs. Betty L. VanValkenburg

Mrs. Betty L. VanValkenburg, 81, of Carlisle Road, Canajoharie, New York went home to be with the Lord Sunday, February 5, 2012 at Nathan Littauer Hospital in Gloversville following a lengthy illness.
Born on March 28, 1930 in Cherry Valley, NY, she was the daughter of Raymond Leneker and Irene Shults Leneker. She was a graduate of Cherry Valley High School, class of 1948. Mrs. VanValkenburg also studied at the Amsterdam City Hospital for Nursing. She was a lifelong area resident.
Mrs. VanValkenburg was a mother and homemaker. She also worked in the Billing Department at the former LifeSavers in Canajoharie and was a proofreader and sales person for the Mohawk Valley Pennysaver for a number of years until her retirement.
She was a member of the Canajoharie Reformed Church where she also taught Sunday School and was a member of the Women’s Guild of the Church.
Mrs. VanValkenburg rode with the Mid-County Volunteer Ambulance Service, was a Girl Scout Leader and loved spending time with her grandchildren.
On April 8, 1950 in Cherry Valley, NY, Betty married Robert W. VanValkenburg. Together they celebrated over 61 years of marriage.
She was predeceased by her son, Paul F. VanValkenburg; 3 sisters and a brother.
Mrs. VanValkenburg is survived by her husband, Robert W. VanValkenburg of Canajoharie, NY; daughter, Judy and her husband Charles Burgess of Canajoharie, NY; granddaughter, Jenna Burgess of Dalhart, TX; grandson, Joshua Burgess of Canajoharie, NY; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, February 9, 2012 at 10:00 am at the Chapel of Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, Inc., 20 Otsego Street, Canajoharie, NY 13317 with Rev. Nancy Ryan officiating. The family will receive relatives and friends on Wednesday, February 8, 2012 from 4-7 at the funeral home. Burial will take place in Fort Plain Cemetery. A service of remembrance will be held on Monday, February 13, 2012 at 7:00pm at the Canajoharie Reformed Church, 15-19 Front Street, Canajoharie, NY with Rev. Miriam Barnes officiating.

Mr. Paul F. VanValkenburg, 58, of Carlisle Road, Canajoharie, New York went home to be with the Lord Sunday, February 5, 2012.
Born on December 13, 1953 in Little Falls, NY, he was the son of Robert W. VanValkenburg and Betty Irene Leneker VanValkenburg. He was a graduate of Canajoharie High School, class of 1972 and also took courses from the Chicago Technical College in 1976. Paul was a lifelong area resident, constructing the home that he and his parents lived in on Carlisle Road.
Mr. VanValkenburg retired from Richardsons in Canajoharie as a batch maker. Prior to his employment with Richardsons Paul was employed at the former LifeSavers in Canajoharie.
He was a member of the Canajoharie Reformed Church.
Mr. VanValkenburg enjoyed carpentry and loved working with computers.
Paul is survived by his parents Robert W. and Betty I. VanValkenburg of Canajoharie, NY; sister, Judy and her husband Charles Burgess of Canajoharie, NY; niece, Jenna Burgess of Dalhart, TX; nephew, Joshua Burgess of Canajoharie, NY; as well as several cousins.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, February 9, 2012 at 10:00am at the Chapel of Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, Inc., 20 Otsego Street, Canajoharie, NY 13317 with Rev. Mr. James Joseph Divers, 66, of Reed Street, Canajoharie, New York died, Saturday, January 28, 2012 at Bassett Healthcare of Cooperstown with his family by his side.
Born on February 16, 1945 in Glasgow, Scotland, he was the son of the late Patricia Havelin Divers. He was a graduate of St. Mungo’s Academy in Scotland. From Scotland James moved to London, England prior to immigrating to London, Ontario, Canada. He then moved to the United States where he became a United States Citizen.
Mr. Divers worked for Pitney Bowes from 1970-79. At his home, he started his own small mailing equipment business, which through expansion became Alternate Way II of Cohoes and provided service to the Capital District with mailing equipment, office supplies and on site shredding.
He was a communicant of Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church in Fort Plain, NY.
Mr. Divers was a professional Motorcross Racer, racing internationally. Since his youth James was an avid football (American soccer) player and fan. He was a member of the Canajoharie Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Rochester Trade Exchange. He took great pleasure in taking his grandchildren for rides on his 4 wheeler.
Mr. Divers met his wife, Judy at Paradise Island in April 1975. They were married December 11, 1978.
He is survived by his wife, Judy Ann Divers of Fort Plain, NY; 2 daughters, Meaghan Patricia Divers of Canajoharie, NY, Ashley Patricia Divers of Fort Plain, NY; sister, Jane Divers of Scotland; aunt, Anna Tovey of London, Ontario, Canada; his pride and joy, grandchildren, Kaiden James Divers and Mariah Olivia Hazzard.
He is also survived by Melanie Divers, her daughter, McKenzie and Jason Divers all of Canada.
A Prayer service will be held on Wednesday, February 1, 2012 at 9:15am at Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, Inc., 20 Otsego Street, Canajoharie, NY 13317 followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am at Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church, Reid Street, Fort Plain, NY 13339 with Father Dennis Murphy officiating. The family will receive relatives and friends on Tuesday, January 31, 2012 from 5-8pm at Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, Inc. Mrs. Patricia A. Miner

Mrs. Patricia A. Van Evera Miner, 69, of Stone Arabia Road, Fort Plain, New York, died, Friday, January 27, 2012 at St. Johnsville Nursing Home following a long battle with cancer.
Born on April 24, 1942 in the Town of Palatine, NY, she was the daughter of John Van Evera and Irene Kretser Van Evera. She was a local area resident her entire life.
Most recently Mrs. Miner worked for La Salle Labs in Canajoharie and Little Falls, prior to that she worked at the Johnstown Knitting Company in Fort Plain, until the closing of the plant. Mrs. Miner worked for both La Salle Labs and Johnstown Knitting Company following her retirement from Beech-Nut and LifeSavers as a machine operator.
She was of Protestant faith.
Mrs. Miner was a member of the Fulton County Senior Citizens. She loved embroidery, crafts, gardening and dancing. She looked forward to motorcycle rides and taking drives in her pink Chevrolet convertible.
On February 17, 1973 in Ephratah, NY, Patricia was married to Harry L. Miner, Sr. He preceded her in death on June 16, 2000. She was also predeceased by a half-sister, Edith Wheaton Sweet.
Mrs. Miner is survived by 2 half-brothers, Franklin Van Evera of Amsterdam, NY, Glen Van Evera of FL; 2 step-daughters, Nola Leamon and Howard Gushue of Fultonville, NY, Lenore Miner of FL; 3 step-sons, Harry L. Miner, Jr. of Johnstown, NY, Charles Miner and Gary Miner both of FL; companion, Keith Watson of Palatine Bridge, NY; several step-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren; as well as aunts, uncles and cousins.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, January 31, 2012 at 6:00pm at the Chapel of Gray-Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, 34 Center Street, Fort Plain, NY 13339 with Rev. Kenneth Dingman officiating. The family will receive relatives and friends on Tuesday, January 31 from 4-6pm at the funeral home. Burial will take place in Ephratah Rural Cemetery at a later date.

Mrs. Catharine B. Foster

  Mrs. Catharine B. ”Kay” Foster, 92, of Clark Ave., Fort Plain, NY, died Friday, January 27, 2012 at Wells Nursing Home, Johnstown, NY, where she had been a resident for 8 months.
    Born May 11, 1919 in Bovina Center, NY, she was the daughter of Anthony Banuat and Margaret Craig Banuat.  After graduating from Delaware Academy in Delhi, NY, Kay attended Oneonta Normal School (the present SUNY Oneonta), and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education in 1940.  It was then that she moved to Caroga Lake, NY where she would live and work for the majority of her life.
    Kay began her teaching career at Wheelerville Union Free School, with one year spent at McNab School, In Gloversville, NY.  In 1943, she was married to Wesley E. Foster.  He preceded her in death on November 31, 1976.
     Along with her excellent teaching abilities, Kay was an accomplished homemaker, excelling in her baking skills (especially pie crusts), sewing ability, needlework projects,  gardening, & caring for her family.  She was also active in community & church organizations.  She was a member of the Wheelerville PTA, a volunteer for the American Red Cross, Sunday School Superintendent for 18yrs at North Bush Methodist Church, and a Girl Scout leader.  The Caroga Lake Evangelical Chapel held a special place in her heart, where she was a Trustee for many years.  Saturday nights during many summers, one would find Kay picking wildflowers by the side of the road for her beautiful Sunday morning bouquets at the Chapel.
    After 31yrs. of teaching, she retired from Wheelerville in 1979 and moved to her new home in Fort Plain to be closer to her family.  She continued to be active by caring for her beloved grandchildren, becoming involved in Delta Kappa Gamma, New York State Retired Teachers’ Association, and the Upper Montgomery Retired Teachers’ Association for which she was a representative to the Annual Retired Teachers’ Convention many times.  She also acted as their Historian, starting a scrapbook of the activities of the Association and its members.  She became an active member of Cornerstone Baptist Church where she met her new church family who became some of her dearest friends.  During her retirement years, her love of traveling began.  She was always anxious to share her adventures regarding the 72 countries she visited and the special friendships she made and has kept to this day.
    Kay lived a long, full life and has now reaped the reward of her heavenly home.  She leaves behind her daughter, Norma Jean Clark of Fort Plain, NY; 2 grandchildren, Kristin E. (Jeffery) Williams of Hastings, MI and Stephen J. (Erin) Clark of Fredericksburg, VA; 7 great-grandchildren, Jacob Williams, Aidan Clark, Emma Williams, Magdalyn Williams, Andrew Clark, Heidi Williams, and Abigail Williams; several nieces & nephews, and many special friends.  She was predeceased by her brother, David Craig Banuat, and 2 sisters, Mary Reynolds and Marjorie Banuat.  She will be missed by all who have had the blessing of having her in their life.
    A service of celebration will be held on Tuesday, January 31, 2012, at 11:00AM at the Cornerstone Baptist Church, Route 10, Ames, NY with the Rev. Alan Potter officiating.  The family will receive relatives and friends on Tuesday from 10-11AM at the church.  Burial will take place in Ferndale Cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to Gray-Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, 34 Center Street, Fort Plain, NY 13339.

Mrs. Frances O’Leary

Frances E. O’Leary (a/k/a our beloved Aunt Fran) of Fort Plain, New York, passed away at age 90 on Saturday January 21, 2012 following a brief illness. Fran was born August 19th, 1921 in Chicago, Illinois and lived in Thousand Oaks, California for 40 years before moving to Fort Plain in 2008. She worked as an accountant before moving to Southern California, and her hobbies ranged from golf to sewing to Hawaiian dancing. Fran loved to express her artistic talent through her beautiful and intricate hand-painted ceramics. In her later years, she supported many causes and donated to many organizations. But her real passion was her family, and she devoted her life to us. Aunt Fran opened her home to any family in need, and nurtured us into one big, happy family living in a home filled with love.

She is survived by her nieces Tracy, Jeanne, and Patricia, nephew Mark, grandnieces Nikki, Amy, and Lauren, grandnephew Scott, and great-grandniece Emily Colleen, and she is preceded in death by her beloved husband John “Bud” O’Leary, sister Rita, brother Richie (Colleen), and her parents Gertrude and Mark. Services will be held in Elmhurst, Illinois. In lieu of flowers and in honor of her beloved dogs, especially Clancy and Molly, please make a donation to the ASPCA or your local -no-kill animal shelter.

Mrs. Amelia L. Fahy, 74, of Reid Street, Fort Plain, New York, died Friday, January 20, 2012 at Mountain Valley Hospice House in Gloversville, NY.
Born on May 5, 1937 in Amsterdam, NY, she was the daughter of Bargey Wilkinson and Victoria Hage Wilkinson. She was a graduate of St. Mary’s Academy in Little Falls, NY, class of 1955 and was a lifetime resident of Fort Plain.
Mrs. Fahy was manager of Plain Food Co-Op in Fort Plain, NY for 16 years. She was the owner and operator of Pattersonville Tree Farm in Pattersonville and previously worked for the Fahy & Sons Tree Farm.
She was a communicant of Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church in Fort Plain, NY.
Mrs. Fahy was a State level and National Champion Wreath Maker. She was also a Girl Scouts Troop Leader for many years in Fort Plain and Canajoharie.
On July 29, 1956 in St. James Roman Catholic Church in Fort Plain, Amelia was married to Thomas P. Fahy. He preceded her in death on September 22, 1993.
Mrs. Fahy is survived by her mother, Victoria H. Wilkinson of Rochester, NY; 7 children, Victoria Asher of Westmoreland, NY, Thomas P. Fahy, III and Leslie of Nelliston, NY, Gerard T. Fahy of Fort Plain, NY, Shawn T. Fahy of Fort Plain, NY, Amelia Cade of Fort Plain, NY, James T. Fahy and Lucy of Johnsonville, NY, Timothy T. Fahy and Holly of Longmont, CO; 2 sisters, Elaine Waldman of NY, Mary Beth Quandt of Rochester, NY; 18 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mrs. Jean B. Brearey, 86, of Prospect Street, Nelliston, New York, died Tuesday, January 17, 2012 at her home with her family by her side.
Born on January 14, 1926 in Quoque, Long Island, NY, she was the daughter of Herbert Bedson and Helen Mitchell Bedson. She was a graduate of Center Moriches High School, class of 1944 and attended Ithaca College.
Mrs. Brearey was employed at SUNY Cortland in the Video Department, then as Registrar for the Boy Scouts in Cortland. She also worked at the Latham Auto Dealership in Watertown and retired from Central National Bank as a clerk in the Controller’s Office in 1988.
She has been a local area resident since 1972, previously residing in Sackets Harbor, NY.
Mrs. Brearey was a member of the Reformed Church of Fort Plain.
She was a member of the Otsquago Chapter #297 Order of the Eastern Star of Fort Plain. She was an EMT until she was 78 and was a member of the Board of Directors of Mid-County Volunteer Ambulance Service, as well as a dispatcher.
On June 11, 1950 in Remsenburg, Long Island, Jean married Robert Brearey. He preceded her in death on October 20, 2003. She was also predeceased by a grandson, Thomas Brearey and brother Reginald M. Bedson.
Mrs. Brearey is survived by her 3 daughters, Susan B. (Henno) Karmo of Guilderland, NY, Cynthia C. (Timothy) Summerfield of Nelliston, NY, Pamela J. (Terry) Vedder of Amsterdam, NY; son, Robert R. Brearey of Oakdale MN; 5 granddaughters, Meghann (Sean) Azlin, Krista Karmo, Anneli Karmo, Rachel Pakenas, Sarah Brearey; 1 grandson, Matthew Summerfield; sister-in-law, Ruth Bedson of CT; good friend, Gerry Maring; several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, January 23, 2012 at 10:00am at the Chapel of Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, Inc., 20 Otsego Street, Canajoharie, NY, with Rev. Nancy Ryan officiating. Mrs. Jane Louise Kosinski

Mrs. Jane Louise Kosinski, 87, of Pauline Avenue, Deerfield, New York died, Wednesday, March 14, 2012 at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Utica following a brief illness.
Born on June 18, 1924 in Nelliston, NY, she was the daughter of Albert Schiemer and Ruth Smith Schiemer. She was a graduate of Fort Plain High School. Mrs. Kosinski later graduated from Albany Business College and also attended Utica college for nursing. She was a resident of the Utica area most of her life.
Mrs. Kosinski was a Psychiatric Aide for the former Utica State Psychiatric Hospital, retiring after 20 years.
She was of Protestant faith.
She was an avid Hockey fan whose favorite teams were the Clinton Comets and the Utica Devils. In the past she enjoyed watching Sports car races at the Fonda Speedway, cheering on local favorite Lou Lazarro. Jane enjoyed traveling with her husband and reading.
Mrs. Kosinski was predeceased by her husband, Walter Kosinski in 1997 and her daughter, Janis C. Becker in 2008.
She is survived by her sons, Eric J. Wolinski of Deerfield, NY, Mark Raymond Wolinski of Deerfield, NY; daughters, Charlayne Crouse of Utica, NY, Bonnie and Jim Hoffman of Canajoharie, NY; 5 grandchildren, Mannie Hoffman, Matt Folts, Rickie Becker, Tanya Crouse, Daryl Crouse; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Helen Koval, 90, of Dahlen Street, Nelliston, New York died, Monday, March 19, 2012 at Mountain Valley Hospice House in Gloversville, following a short illness.
Mrs. Koval was born on April 20, 1921 in Schuylkill, PA. She had been a resident of the local area since 1945, previously residing in Poland and New York City.
For many years Mrs. Koval and her husband, Andrew were the owners and operators of Lavok Dairy Farm; she later when on to work for Beech-Nut and LifeSavers until her retirement.
She was a communicant of Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church in Fort Plain.
Mrs. Koval enjoyed collecting antiques and refinishing old trucks. She loved the color blue.
On April 14, 1945 in Little Falls, NY, Helen was married to Andrew Koval. He preceded her in death on April 17, 2001. She was also predeceased by her daughters, Christine Oare and DeAnna Evans.
Mrs. Koval is survived by her son, Martin and Christina Koval of Buckley, WA; 4 grandchildren, Kyle Koval of Racine, WI, Marc Evans of Walton, NY, Darrien Evans of Delhi, NY, Sarah Howell of Canajoharie, NY; 2 great-grandchildren, Mayla and Nolan Evans both of Walton, NY.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, March 22, 2012 at 10:00am at Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church, Reid Street, Fort Plain, NY with Father Dennis Murphy officiating. Mr. Shawn M. Wellman, 34, of County Highway 109, Broadalbin, New York died suddenly on Sunday, April 1, 2012 at his home with his family.
Born on August 25, 1977 in Cooperstown, NY, he was the son of Robert Bruce and Leann Webb. He was a graduate of Cherry Valley High School, class of 1996. He attended several programs through Harley Davidson and Toyota to further his education. Shawn had been a resident of Broadalbin since 2008, previously residing in Gloversville.
Most recently Mr. Wellman was an auto technician for Steet Toyota in Johnstown, NY. He had also worked for American Foreign Auto and Vans Harley Davidson.
Mr. Wellman attended Fulmont Community Church in Johnstown, NY.
Shawn enjoyed working on motorcycles with his friends. He also enjoyed being with his children, hunting and fishing.
On June 25, 2011 at the Fulmont Community Church in Johnstown, Shawn was married to Mary Gotobed. Their relationship started in 2005.
Mr. Wellman was predeceased by his grandfather, Leon Webb.
Shawn is survived by his mother and step-father, Leann and Larry Smith of Springfield Center, NY; father, Robert Bruce of Florida; grandmother, Nancy Webb of Salt Springville, NY; wife, Mary Wellman of Fish House, NY; children, Dylan Wellman, Andrew Cabezas, Michaela Rosario, Justin Rosario; brother, Morgan Bruce of Florida; several Aunts, Uncles, Nieces, Nephews and Cousins.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 5, 2012 at 10:00am at the Chapel of Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, Inc., 20 Otsego Street, Canajoharie, NY with Pastor Greg Meyers officiating. Mr. John J. Hernigle, Jr., 81, of Lafayette Street, Palatine Bridge, New York died Saturday, April 14, 2012 at the Wilkinson Residential Healthcare Facility in Amsterdam.
Born on June 18, 1930 in the Town of Root, NY, he was the son of John Hernigle and Harriet Putnam Hernigle. He was a graduate of Canajoharie High School and attended SUNY Morrisville. He was a lifelong area resident.
Mr. Hernigle was the Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds for Canajoharie Central School for many years, retiring in 1992.
He served in the US Army during the Korean War and continued to serve as a reservist until 1987.
Mr. Hernigle attended the Amsterdam United Methodist Church.
He was a member of the Smith-Schultz American Legion Post #222 and of the Canajoharie/Fort Plain BPOE Elks Lodge #2621.
On January 20, 1956 in Cherry Valley, NY, John was married to Nellie I. Spencer. Together they celebrated 56 years of marriage.
He was preceded in death by son-in-law, Christopher Keeney.
Mr. Hernigle is survived by his wife, Nellie I. Hernigle of Palatine Bridge, NY; daughter, Jacqueline and James Cromwell of Bumpass, VA; 2 sons, Richard and Lena Hernigle of Helsinki, Finland, Gerald and Denise Hernigle of Canajoharie, NY; 5 grandchildren, Kainen Hernigle of Canajoharie, NY, Nicholas Hernigle of Canajoharie, NY, Silas Bowerman of Killeen TX, Nathan Bowerman of Fort Plain, NY, Emily Cromwell of Sutton, MA; 2 brothers, James and Betty Hernigle of Sprakers, NY, Albert and Eleanor Hernigle of Sprakers, NY; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mrs. Susie M. Terns, 67, of Red Barn Road, Cobleskill, New York passed away Sunday, April 15, 2012 at her home with her family following a brief illness.
Born on September 17, 1944, she was the daughter of Robert E. Wells and Agnes Small Wells. She attended Canajoharie and Springfield Schools and was a lifelong resident of Schoharie County.
On September 24, 1982 in Cobleskill, NY, Susan married William Terns. Together they shared 35 wonderful, memorable years.
Mrs. Terns had worked for Comptone Sunglass Factory in Canajoharie, Richmondville Glove Factory, Eden Park Nursing Home in Cobleskill, The Holiday Inn in Cobleskill and was also Co-Owner of the Cobleskill Laundry Mat.
Susie enjoyed crafts and interior decorating. She loved traveling and laughter and was a loving mother, grandmother and wife.
She was predeceased by her brother, Donnie Wells.
Mrs. Terns is survived by her husband, William Terns of Cobleskill, NY; 3 daughters, Teresa and Ron Wetsell of Central Bridge, NY, Lory Miers and Mark Somers of Warnerville, NY, Dawn Parks and fiancé Jeff Handy of Sharon Hill, NY; brother, Roland Wells of Sharon Springs, NY; 6 grandchildren, Mike, Chris, Crystal, Nicole, Danny, Kyle; 6 great-grandchildren, Sierra, Deegan, Kierra, Isabella, JR, David Jr., as well as several nieces and nephews.

Mr. George Robert Vosburgh, a local business man, of Mahr Road, died early Saturday morning, April 21, 2012 at his home.
Born on August 14, 1925 in Amsterdam, NY, he was the son of George Vosburgh and Llora Dievendorf Vosburgh. He was a graduate of Canajoharie Central School, class of 1943. He was also a graduate of Colgate University, class of 1945 with a Business Degree.
On September 16, 1950 in Johnstown, NY, George was married to Barbara Grant. Together they celebrated 61 years of marriage.
Mr. Vosburgh was the owner and operator of Vosburgh Inc. as well as Valley Cable Company.
He was a member of St. John’s & St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Canajoharie.
Mr. Vosburgh was the Director of the NYS TV Association. He was a volunteer Driver for Cancer and at the Herkimer Home. Mr. Vosburgh was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, Bud Lite Water Ski Association and the first member of the Pangaea Water Ski Team.
Mr. Vosburgh served in the US Marine Corp., during the Korean War obtaining a rank of V12/Captain.
He is predeceased by his brother, Dean Vosburgh.
Mr. Vosburgh is survived by his wife, Barbara G. Vosburgh of Canajoharie, NY; 2 sons, George O. Vosburgh of Canajoharie, NY, Gerald Vosburgh of Bellingham, WA; brother, John Vosburgh of Olympia, WA; grandchildren, Austin, Chelsea, Sheldon, Zephran, Jeremy, Amanda; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mr. John “Jack” W. Tooker, 75, of Third Avenue, Canajoharie, New York died Wednesday, April 25, 2012 at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown.
Born on October 10, 1936 in Amsterdam, NY, he was the son of John L. Tooker and Florence Wiles Tooker. He was a graduate of Canajoharie High School, class of 1955 and was a lifelong area resident.
Mr. Tooker was employed at LifeSavers in Canajoharie for 32 years. He then worked for Richardson Brands in Canajoharie in 1989.
He served in the US Air Force from 1957-60.
John was a member of the Canajoharie Reformed Church. He served on the Church Consistory and was a Deacon and Elder.
He was a member of the Fort Plain Masonic Lodge #433, where he earned his dedicated service apron award in 2004, member of the Otsquago Chapter #297 Order of the Eastern Star in Fort Plain and served as past Patron. John was the President of the Dillenback Association and former member of the Boy Scouts of America.
On May 15, 1976 in Fort Plain, NY, John married Fay H. Dillenback. She preceded him in death on December 31, 2011.
Mr. Tooker is survived by his step-son, David S. Van Wormer of Canajoharie, NY; sister, Joan Ellis of Clifton Park, NY; nieces and nephews and a cousin, Jean Sayer of Oregon.
A funeral service will be held on Sunday, April 29, 2012 at 3:00pm at the Canajoharie Reformed Church with Rev. Miriam Barnes officiating. The family will receive relatives and friends on Sunday, April 29 from 1-3pm at the Church. Mrs. Shizue “Candy” Hazzard, 86, of Wagners Hollow Road, Fort Plain, New York died, Friday, April 27, 2012 at Little Falls Hospital, following a long illness.
Born on August 1, 1925 in Yokohama, Japan, she was the daughter of Den Saku Washizu and Ryu Washizu.
On February 17, 1953 at the American Consulate’s Office in Japan, she was married to Leslie Hazzard. Shortly after their marriage they came to the United States to start their life together and raise a family.
Mrs. Hazzard was a mother and homemaker. She worked at several area businesses as a seamstress.
She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Fort Plain.
Candy enjoyed gardening, knitting, crocheting, cooking and going shopping. Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Leslie Hazzard on March 16, 2001; daughter, Betty Jane Hazzard; and son, Leslie Michael Hazzard.
Mrs. Hazzard is survived by her 3 sons, James O. and Carrie Hazzard of Delanson, NY, Walter L. and Sharon Hazzard of Fort Plain, NY, Steve K. and Tirzah Hazzard of Fort Plain, NY; daughter, Linda and Steve Hudyncia of Fort Plain, NY; 13 grandchildren, Melissa, Cory, Justin, Chantel, Jeffrey, Megan, Lesly, Gregory, Matthew, Soren, Hans, Dustin, Travis; 6 great-grandchildren, Hunter, Brendan, Sydney, Kali, Olivia, Aysah; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She enjoyed many interesting hobbies throughout her life.
She was predeceased by her husband, Robert Steffenhagen.

Born on January 2, 1944 in the Town of Minden, NY, he was the son of Ralph Frasier Showerman, Sr. and Irene Smith Showerman. He was a graduate of Fort Plain High School and was a lifetime area resident.
Mr. Showerman was a truck driver, most recently working for Champagne Trucking in Albany, NY. He spent the last 4-5 years in retirement.
He was of Lutheran faith.
Mr. Showerman was predeceased by his son, Mark Showerman in 2006.
Mr. Showerman is survived by his sisters, Alice Frederick of Palatine Bridge, NY, Terry Arduini of Fort Plain, NY, Robin Stolts of North Carolina; brother, Ralph Showerman of Candor, NY; and granddaughter, Alexis Showerman of Fort Plain, NY.
